Attica Public Schools Library

Attica USD #511 has one library that services all faculty, staff and students K-12. The library features nearly 12,000 books and videos. A large portion of the book collection is part of the Accelerated Reader program.

Thelibrary utilizes a Follett on-line public cataloging system that incorporates a computerized card catalog, checkouts, and reports. The card catalog is available to faculty, staff and students on computers throughout the school building.

A small computer lab is available in the library for AR testing and library research in addition to use of the card catalog.

The library subscribes to a variety of magazines including Newsweek, Sports Illustrated, People, National Geographic, and Consumer Reports to name a few.

Subscriptions to two Web-based research databases provide students and teachers a safe, filtered search on a variety of topics. Kids InfoBits' research is targeted to the Kindergarten through 5th grade level. Student Research Center Junior features information geared towards the junior and high school level students. The databases feature a wide range of resources including primary documents, biographies, topical essays, full-text articles from over 300 magazines, newspapers, over 20,000 photographs and illustrations, as well as audio and video clips.

In addition, the library is part of the Chalkwaves VHS collection which provides the faculty with instructional media for use in the classroom. The service is based at Kansas City’s KCPT public television station. A wide variety of topics are covered through the videos currently available and new topics are added each year.

An affiliation with the South Central Kansas Library System, or SCKLS, provides another resource for requesting additional books, magazines, etc. that are not available on-site.

An AR library is located in the Elementary School for checkouts and returns of books for added convenience to the elementary faculty and students.

The library is definitely part of the computer age. The librarians are now utilizing on-line access for purchasing new materials and AR quizzes.
